What you might do

Projects change with what's needed that day. You might work on:

  • Pantry Select: inspecting and sorting donated food and other items
  • Scan a Can: sorting items donated by Kroger stores
  • Backpack Buddy: packing weekend food sacks for children
  • Senior Box: packing balanced food boxes for seniors
  • Bulk Repack: scooping rice, beans and other staples into family-size bags
  • Produce Sort: sorting and bagging fresh produce
  • Protein Pack Room: portioning bulk protein in a cold, USDA clean room

Staying safe

  • Keep your phone away in the warehouse. Forklifts and heavy machines are moving around you.
  • Don't wear earbuds, so you can hear safety instructions.
  • Leave jewelry off. It can catch on things or fall into food.
  • Only people wearing steel-toe clips operate pallet jacks.

Food in project areas

The food you sort and pack is for neighbors. Don't eat, drink or chew gum in project areas.

Photos

Photos are welcome. Take them in the Lobby, before or after your shift, since phones stay away in the warehouse. Tag Houston Food Bank when you post.

Getting help

Ask the staff member leading your project whenever you're unsure. Student Heroes in green lanyards are there to help new volunteers too. Staff will tell you about breaks and restrooms.

You can be asked to leave for theft, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, causing a disturbance that puts others at risk, or breaking safety and health rules.

Cleanup

The last part of every shift is cleanup. It keeps food safe and gets the area ready for the next group.
